Henry Long 2025 Class-Elected Commencement Speech
Lately I’ve found myself thinking about how our class functions, and how us students can build each other up. As a first-generation, low-income student, I understand the numerous challenges that come with college, even when it’s virtual. As a transfer student, I am so excited to get to know my grade (and everyone on campus) even better as one of the senior apartment RAs. In my free time, I love to go to the beach, thrift, birdwatch, and of course hang out with friends and meet new people!
I am so happy to be at CMC and I want to guarantee that everyone feels the same way. We will continue to have more class zooms within CMC but also as a 5C community. Whether it is virtual events (synchronous and asynchronous) or hopefully physical in the spring, as your president I will make sure that this class stays as strong and tight-knit as possible. We as a class have already had engaging and reflective conversations, and I want to not only continue having those discussions within our class, but to promote those open and productive conversations to members of the student body and faculty. My goal as your president is to make sure we continue to promote that welcoming environment amongst everyone in the student body.

I have a tea-bar cart in my room and would love to share a cup of tea with you if you want to talk about anything. But most of all, I love being around people and creating fun and meaningful spaces — whether that’s for music, deep convos, spontaneous dance parties, or games. I love to cook in Janie’s, go to the farmer’s market, craft a bunch of random things, and yap, so I hope to catch y’all at my open door hours.
Your education has led you out, graduation is just a step, and this commencement is just the beginning. Today’s ceremony inaugurates rather than culminates your intellectual journey, and Claremont is a mere Route-66 pit stop on your path towards truth. As you walk the stage, remember that you join in a tradition that spans nine decades here at CMC and ten centuries around the world. You’re imperfect, and you always will be, on this side of paradise. Graduates, the world you enter is a wonderful place, but it has its dangers. But without the strange correspondence between our minds and reality, none of this research would be possible.

I will advocate for all underserved and disadvantaged students. And now, I’m running to be your first-year class president. I’m not going to promise a dramatic transformation of our class experience. I justified my fear with the fact that I’m not American, and subsequently that the Class of 2024 wouldn’t buy into the leadership of a sub-saharan African student.
What You Need to Know About the Soon-to-be-Launched Data Science Major
Vote for a president who will continue to make CMC the best place to be! We have already established ourselves as the most cohesive class that CMC has seen to date, and it is my desire as President to keep it that way. I have loved getting to know all of you through our Zooms and I want to keep that attitude and excitement going. I want to make sure that everyone feels at home at CMC. I fell in love with the environment and felt instantly at home. I knew I wanted to attend CMC from the second I set foot on campus.
U.S. Foreign Policy Outlook After the 2024 Election
The committee, which consists of professors from various departments, has proposed a 12 course major with classes in math, statistics, probability, computer science, and ethics. I think if it had been the first round, I would’ve voted for someone else and maybe wouldn’t have even ranked Mamdani and would’ve had other people who were more centrist, liberal types. I’ve loved getting to know you all through classes, group chats, and Zoom calls, and so I’d love to represent you all as your first year Class President. If you’re having issues handling hardships this pandemic brings and being a full-time student, I’ll be there to help you gain access to whatever support you need. The main reason I think I’m the best candidate is that I’ll be a representative of the class just as much as I’ll be a president of the class. I’m from Syosset, New York, I love animal crackers and cake, I have a dog named Shadow, and I work at Starbucks.

Discussing global migration and other issues, Professor Jean-Pierre Murray, who focuses on global governance and international law, warned of a decline in multilateralism and the “liberal international world order” as a result of Trump’s rise. As students at an institution whose mission is to prepare us for thoughtful and productive lives, we have an obligation to be better than the hateful and divisive rhetoric consuming our civic discourse. After class, I asked those same classmates to talk.
In my free time, I love playing any kind of sport (especially cornhole, pickleball, and volleyball), dominating board games (Settlers of Catan), or doing anything involving the outdoors. One of the things I love most about CMC is the many wonderful opportunities and the sense of community. I am from Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi, studying Environmental Analysis on the Science track with a sequence in Asian American Studies. Data Science is my major, but I really love cybersecurity. One of my favorite things about CMC is the tight-knit, vibrant community, and as an RA, I’m excited to help keep that spirit of support and fun alive!

I’m always around campus whether it be studying, chilling at the hub or hanging out and sunbathing with my friends! Koch observed that Trump’s actions do not always align with promises made on the campaign trail. Moreover, many of the professors responded to student questions about whether Trump can or wants to achieve all of his stated goals. Finally, the Director of the Keck Center and an expert on Russia politics, Hilary Appel, Podlich Family Professor of Government and George R. Roberts Fellow, outlined Trump’s stated approach to dealing with the war in Ukraine, which she characterized as more dovish toward Russia than the Biden administration.

- “The data science major will allow students to be a player, an expert in data science,” said Peter Uvin, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty, to stress the distinctive purposes the data science major would serve.
They seemed to think that whoever was daring enough to challenge their opinions only disagreed because they were racist and misogynistic, too. These classmates halted our productive discussion, made the class feel uncomfortable, and made me feel alienated. Later in the discussion, another classmate specifically accused me of condoning racism and misogyny because I went to an election watch party for Republican interns. When it was their turn to talk, they insisted that Trump won because his supporters were determined to amplify racism and misogyny. As the class gave their answers – economic malaise, Harris’s lack of time, Biden’s unpopularity – I noticed a group of classmates making incredulous, repulsed facial expressions whenever someone answered. Because of this, there are some concerns about the major’s emphasis on math and statistics and lack of offerings in computer science.
I’m beyond excited to help build a community at Apartments that is friendly, inclusive, supportive and fun, and have a great year together! Let’s yap anytime, anywhere, about whatever you want. On campus you’ll find me locking in at The Hub with a coffee (I can only focus amid chaos) or strutting around campus as if it’s my personal runway.
My door is always open, and I’m always available to talk about anything. I love dancing bachata, listening to the handpan, solving crosswords, playing spikeball, and taking polar swims. I’m French-American and majoring in Organizational Studies.
At CMC, I am majoring in PPE-Gov, and I have an intermittent sequence in imposter syndrome. In my free time, you’ll find me hanging out with friends, on a late night walk, or working on an arts and crafts project. One of my favorite things about CMC is the community, and I’m really looking forward to contributing to helping make Wohlf feel like home for everyone as an RA. I’m excited to be able to help spread that positive community at Green and throughout campus. I am a psychology major with a sequence in gender and sexuality studies!
Socrates said something like this—so did St. Paul—and they both got killed. Now, the right response to the grandeur of the world is wonder, awe, and—dare I say it—humility. Some will argue that the best response to the vastness of the unknown is to be larger than life, to be greedy, to grab what you can.
On campus, I’m a Romero Success Coach and a member of the CMS Men’s Basketball Team. I’m a Government major from 20 cmc markets review minutes outside of Chicago, hoping to go to law school in a few years (please reach out if you need pre-law/government advice!). Can’t wait to build a great community in Auen this year. I also enjoy playing intramural dodgeball, watching baseball (Go Dodgers!), playing video games (most are made by a small indie company called Riot), and eating most of my meals at Collins.
